Old Pumping Station by the River Otra

Here are the remains of an old pumping station that operated from 1939 to 1971. From this site, water from the River Otra was pumped up to Bærvann and Storemyrvann – two lakes in Bymarka, the town’s forest and recreation area.

The water was – and over time became even more – polluted by sewage from households and wastewater from factories in Vennesla. Before the decision was made to use water from the Otra as a drinking water source, the authorities received several protests from the public. Some residents even threatened to leave the city if Otra water were chosen as a drinking source. Nevertheless, the decision was approved.

From 1939 to 1956, water was pumped up to Storemyrvann through wooden pipes bound with iron wire. From 1956 to 1971, it was pumped up to Bærvann through new cast-iron pipes. From there, the water flowed down to Storemyrvann and Bjortjønn, and then through pipes to Dalane. There it was filtered and treated with lime in a purification plant built in 1941. The water was then distributed through the city’s pipeline network, including a tunnel from Dalane to Eg and further across to Lund.

Hier befinden sich Reste eines alten Pumpwerks, das von 1939 bis 1971 in Betrieb war. Von hier wurde Wasser aus Otra nach Bærvann und Storemyrvann in Bymarka gepumpt.

Das Wasser war und wurde im Laufe der Jahre stärker durch Abwässer aus Haushalten und Betriebsabwässer aus Fabriken in Vennesla verschmutzt. Bevor beschlossen wurde, das Wasser aus Otra als Quelle zu nutzen, gingen mehrere Proteste der Bevölkerung bei den Behörden ein. Einige drohten, die Stadt zu verlassen, sollte Wasser aus Otra Trinkwasser werden. Dennoch wurde es beschlossen.

Von 1939 bis 1956 wurde das Wasser in Holzrohren, mit Eisendraht umwickelt, nach Storemyrvann gepumpt. Von 1956 bis 1971 wurde es in neuen Leitungen aus Gusseisen nach Bærvann gepumpt. Von dort floss es nach Storemyrvann und Bjortjønn und in Leitungen nach Dalane. Dort wurde es in einer 1941 errichteten Anlage gereinigt und gekalkt. Über das Leitungsnetz wurde es unter anderem durch einen Tunnel von Dalane nach Eg und weiter nach Lund verteilt.
